Sessa pediu como recompensa o arroz necessário para pôr um grão na primeira casa do tabuleiro, dois grãos na segunda casa (ou seja, o dobro do número de grãos da casa anterior), quatro grãos na terceira casa (ou seja, o dobro do número de grãos da casa anterior), e assim sucessivamente: em cada casa do tabuleiro, o dobro do número de grãos da casa anterior.
O Príncipe riu-se dele, achou muito pequena a recompensa, e garantiu que atenderia o seu pedido. Mas… será que foi assim tão bom negócio para o Príncipe?...
